PIBA Foods Limited is a Ugandan agro-industrial food processing enterprise and champion of environmental conservation and climate action, committed to transforming Uganda’s agricultural abundance into sustainable economic opportunities through innovation, value addition, improved nutrition, and inclusive community development. The company empowers banana farmers and other agricultural producers by promoting sustainable and climate-smart farming practices, strengthening market access and export opportunities, and developing high-quality value-added products that enhance livelihoods while advancing environmental sustainability.

PIBA Foods works collaboratively with farmers, researchers, government institutions, development partners, and other stakeholders, combining scientific food processing, farmer mobilization, research-driven product development, value addition, and market integration to unlock the full potential of Uganda’s agricultural sector.

As one of the world’s leading producers and consumers of cooking bananas (matooke), Uganda has enormous potential for agro-industrial development. However, significant quantities of bananas are lost each year due to post-harvest spoilage, limited processing and value-addition capacity, inadequate storage, and weak market linkages. PIBA Foods was established to address these challenges by transforming highly perishable agricultural produce into shelf-stable, nutritious, innovative, and market-ready food products, while creating sustainable markets for farmers, reducing food losses, promoting climate-smart agriculture, and contributing to Uganda’s agro-industrial transformation.

The Challenge We Are Solving

Uganda produces more than 10 million metric tonnes of bananas annually, yet the sector continues to face significant challenges, including:

High post-harvest losses and food wastage
Limited Agro processing and value-addition capacity
Low and unstable incomes among smallholder farmers
Persistent rural poverty and limited livelihood opportunities
Limited access to high-value and premium markets
Low export competitiveness of locally produced agricultural products

Our Business Model

PIBA Foods Limited operates an integrated, climate-smart agro-industrial value chain model that connects smallholder farmers to markets through sustainable production, responsible sourcing, value addition, innovation, and commercialization.

The model begins with mobilizing, training, and supporting farmers to adopt organic and climate-smart banana farming practices, followed by the aggregation and sourcing of quality agricultural raw materials for efficient processing into nutritious, safe, innovative, and market-ready products.

Through agro-processing and value addition, PIBA Foods reduces post-harvest losses, extends the shelf life of agricultural produce, improves farmer incomes, and creates products with greater market and export potential.

The company works closely with farmers, researchers, government institutions, development partners, distributors, and consumers to strengthen the entire value chain and continuously develop products that respond to changing nutritional and market needs.
